The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
