A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's major government projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this incident,” stated the national leader.
The president announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term ended the year before. This project was closely associated with his leadership's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The construction of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its duties in civilian projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party demanded an prompt pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these national undertakings.
