In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
