The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.
Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Competitors are granted the right to question specific decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move follows just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a rally.
Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a player can ask for.
Practical Application
A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Growing Trend
This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.
Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
